San Diego Gives 2024

Support the New & Next at La Jolla Playhouse

Your gift today can light up Broadway tomorrow

Christopher AshleyLed by Tony Award winning Artistic Director Christopher Ashley, La Jolla Playhouse has solidified its reputation of originating new work, producing a total of 120 world premieres and sending 36 productions to Broadway – including the currently-running, Tony Award-winning hit musical The Outsiders.

In a season where six Playhouse originals played in New York (Harmony, Lempicka, The Outsiders, The Who’s Tommy, Is It Thursday Yet?, and Here There Are Blueberries), we still rely on support from our community that allows us to take risks on daring new works.

When you donate through our San Diego Gives campaign, you join our movement to bring San Diegans transformative programming which explores the here and now – and together, expand our world’s compassion, understanding and hope.

When You Give…

  • $50 | Hospitality for a playwright and director: gifts in this amount could give our talent true San Diego flavor with a hot meal from one of our local favorites
  • $100 | Printing scripts for the (many!) re-writes during the rehearsal process for a new play
  • $250 | Last year, two of our readings were entirely auditory experiences. This gift could cover costs to hire a sound mixer for a DNA New Work Series reading
  • $500 | Help wanted! This amount covers one production assistant for a DNA New Work Series process for a new play
  • $1,000 | A gift of this amount could cover travel expenses for an out-of-town artist
  • $5,000 | Support for the artists: this is the average amount of fees for the playwright, director and actors for a DNA Series process for a new play
  • $10,000 | Enough to support an entire DNA Series process for a new play

Thank you for supporting new works at La Jolla Playhouse. We are thrilled to be able to provide the San Diego community with the first look at tomorrow’s smash hits, and incredibly grateful to have our audiences shape those productions’ next steps. Give today and double your donation: all gifts up to $5,000 will be matched by the La Jolla Playhouse Board of Trustees!

Developing New Work

Artistic Partnerships
The Playhouse has established ongoing relationships with artists from all fields – playwrights, directors, designers and actors – who continue to call the Playhouse their artistic home.

“I come here and there’s a sense of history, but also there’s all the past productions that inhabit this room so I walk into the rehearsal room and expect to see actors from my past productions walking around…When I’m here, my whole body knows that I’m supposed to create something. It’s the best place in America to develop new work.”
– Moisés Kaufman

DNA New Work Series
Through the DNA New Work Series, playwrights and directors have the opportunity to develop their new project, culminating in a series of free, public readings and workshops. For artists, the DNA process provides the space and support to let their vision and creativity flourish. For audiences, it’s a rare chance to see a new work in its earliest stages and provide feedback that helps shape the work’s future. 11 of our DNA Readings have transferred to our Subscription Season – including this season’s Derecho.
