Picking up a play can be daunting. Whether it was written 400 years ago or just sprung from a writer’s laptop, it can be difficult to imagine how the words on the page translate to a full-scale production.
In this exciting new event series, How to Read a Play, our Director of Artistic Development, Gabriel Greene, will teach guiding dramaturgical principles he uses to evaluate plays and musicals at La Jolla Playhouse.
Join us as we meet every other month to discuss a play selected by Gabriel to unpack the written word as well as our own individual processes for reading.
Our first meeting takes place:
Monday, May 12
5:30 – 7:00pm
Seuss 1 Rehearsal Room
La Jolla Playhouse
$20 to attend in person, free to attend virtually.
Come as you are — there is no assigned reading ahead of our first meeting.
Space for this event is limited. Please register at your earliest convenience if you plan to join us.
A Note from Gabriel Greene
People sometimes ask me, “What makes a good play?” An equally important question is, “What makes a good reader?” I’ve been evaluating scripts professionally for nearly 25 years, and I’m still trying to figure out how to get better at it.
This series is based on the weekly script analysis meetings I have with our Artistic Interns – meetings where we establish a vocabulary for how we talk about plays, then refine that vocabulary as we encounter more and more scripts. We’ll dive into the nuts and bolts of dramaturgical elements, and we’ll also challenge ourselves to become more compassionate, clear-eyed and incisive readers.
