Accessible Entrances

There are accessible entrances at all of the buildings in the Theatre District, including theatres, rehearsal rooms and restrooms.

Wheelchair seats in the theatres:

  • Weiss Theatre – wheelchair seats are accessed through the main lobby doors (for Festival seating), a house right emergency exit (for Row N seats), and a house left hallway to elevator (for Row A seats). For Row N and Row A seats, please check in with a Front of House staff member, who will guide you.
  • Forum Theatre – wheelchair seats are accessed via a ramp to the main theatre entrance.
  • Potiker Theatre – wheelchair seats are accessed through  the main lobby doors (for Orchestra Row A seats) and a house left hallway to elevator (for Balcony seats). For Balcony seats, please check in with a Front of House staff member, who will guide you.

Accessible Seating

All theaters have wheelchair- and scooter-accessible locations where patrons can remain in their wheelchairs or transfer to theatre seats. Patrons who cannot or do not wish to transfer from their wheelchairs to a theater seat should request wheelchair-accessible locations when ordering tickets.

The Playhouse offers Access Subscriptions (a package of 3 or more plays). For Access Subscriptions, wheelchair seats can be purchased with one complimentary companion seat at all performances online or by phone. Be sure to choose or request accessible seating when making ticket reservations.

For assistance selecting wheelchair accessible seats, please contact Patron Services on [email protected] or (858) 550-1010. Please notify a House Manager or Usher once you arrive.

Accessible Restrooms

All restrooms are wheelchair accessible. Restrooms are located at Weiss Theatre lobby, Potiker Theatre lobby and courtyard outside of Forum Theatre.

Courtesy Wheelchairs

We have a courtesy wheelchair available upon request. Please check in with a Front of House staff member upon arrival to request use.

Closed Captioning

We are thrilled to add closed captioning to our access services for the 2024/25 Season. Closed captioning in real time is available during Access Performances on individual devices.  The captioning service includes the text of the performance being transmitted to an individual device in real time (often with a short delay).

Patrons who wish to use closed captioning may:

  1. Use their own device to connect to a web browser, or
  2. Check out a device pre-show by visiting the Patron Information table in the lobby or theater plaza prior to performances (subject to availability).

Device holders may also be checked out, pending availability. Please provide a credit card or ID for device usage.

The webpage with captions will have options to change the font color, background color, and font size. We recommend using a dark background color and light font color to minimize distractions to others.

If you plan to use closed captioning, please call (858) 550-1010 or email [email protected] in advance to ensure you are seated in an area of the theatre where the captioning technology will work best. We recommend arriving 15-20 minutes prior to the start of the performance to arrange devices, device holders and ideal seating location.

Assisted Listening Devices (ALDs)

Assisted listening devices amplify and clarify sound by cutting down or eliminating ambient noise. The Playhouse has devices for use in each of our theatres. Devices are distributed free-of-charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Patrons can check out a device pre-show by visiting the Patron Information table in the lobby or theatre plaza prior to performances (subject to availability). Please provide a credit card or ID for device usage.

Hearing Loop in Weiss and Forum Theatres

A hearing loop system is installed in Weiss Theatre and Forum Theatre. Patrons with telecoil-compatible devices can connect directly to the hearing loop without additional equipment needed. Please see instructions for your particular hearing device about how to activate this function and connect to the hearing loop. Patrons without their own telecoil-compatible devices can check out a device (see above).

Please contact Patron Services if you wish to use this service so we can ensure you are seated in an area of the theatre where the ALDs work. We will specially select seating for you.

Infrared System in Potiker Theatre

Infrared assisted listening systems are installed in the Potiker Theatre and headsets may be used at any seat. All patrons who would like amplified sound in the Potiker need to check out one of our ALDs.

The device has an infrared receiver that connects to infrared illuminators hanging in the theatre. The device needs a clear, uncovered ‘line of sight’ to the illuminator in order to work. Please contact Patron Services if you wish to use this service so we can ensure you are seated in the best possible area of the theatre. We will specially select seating for you.

Sign Language Interpretation

For patrons who use ASL, a live American Sign Language Interpretation is available at a performance during the run of each production. Please check the show pages for Access dates. For best site lines to ASL interpreters select seats on the right side of the audience when facing the stage. Please contact Patron Services if you wish to use this service so we can ensure you are seated in the best possible area of the theatre. We will specially select seating for you.

Audio Description

Live audio description is available by request and prior arrangement after the Opening Night of each production.*  The audio description service includes a pre-performance reading from the program of the dramaturgy, biographies and production information as well as descriptions of physical action in the play in real time, being transmitted via a select channel (channel 2) on the assisted listening devices.

To request audio description, please contact us at least 7 business days in advance so that we can coordinate your tickets and this service. Call Patron Services on (858) 550-1010 or email [email protected] and we will work with you to confirm a date.

Patrons who wish to listen to the description must pick up an Assisted Listening headset. Headsets are distributed free-of-charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Patrons can check out a device pre-show by visiting the Patron Information table in the lobby or theater plaza prior to performances (subject to availability). Please provide a credit card or ID for device usage.

The device has an infrared receiver that connects to infrared illuminators hanging in the theatre. The device needs a clear, uncovered ‘line of sight’ to the illuminator in order to work. When you contact Patron Services to request this service, we will  ensure you are seated in an area of the theatre where the headphones work. We will select seating for you.

Audio describers start pre-show notes approximately 20 minutes before the performance begins.

* Please note, Audio Description  is available at performances after Opening Night, and is not available during first look previews. This service is subject to availability.

Patrons with Sensory Friendly needs

Sensory Friendly Seats

La Jolla Playhouse has some seats reserved for people with physical and/or sensory access needs. These seats are usually on an aisle to allow for increased space and movement. Please consider selecting this seat if stimming, stretching, or moving in any way during the show would best support your audience experience. To reserve Sensory Friendly seats, please see the seat maps once single tickets go on sale for each show, or contact Patron Services on [email protected] or (858) 550-1010 who can help select seats.

Sensory Friendly Environment

La Jolla Playhouse’s Access performances offer a relaxed and welcoming environment for patrons with sensory sensitivities. While the content of the performance will not change, patrons are welcome to respond to the play in ways that work for them, including making verbal noise and moving physically when possible.

Whenever available, the Playhouse may provide things like a quiet/calm space, small fidgets, a space for patrons to move and a list of sensory-intense moments within the show.

For more information about a sensory friendly environment, call (858) 550-1010, email [email protected] and see the patron information table in the lobby.
