La Jolla Playhouse Tech Theatre Summer Intensive for Theatre Educators

Come to the Tony Award winning La Jolla Playhouse for a fun filled and action packed week of professional learning intensive in technical theatre. This opportunity offers hands-on activities for the new theatre teacher who needs additional support to safely teach tech theatre as a course or the veteran theatre teacher who wants to reacquaint themselves with tech theatre best practices. Your experiences will be facilitated by veteran high school Theatre teachers and La Jolla Playhouse Teaching Artists, Julie Benitez and Kirsten Giard–experienced educators with nearly 60 years of teaching combined. You will also interact with professional artists and technicians working on La Jolla Playhouse productions.

You have multiple options to choose from:

Option A: $219

New Theatre Teacher 101 One-Day Workshop
Monday, June 24, 2024. 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

• This workshop is for the brand new theatre teacher, the teacher who is building a new program, or the veteran teacher who is taking on a theatre program.
• Learn some of the secrets and shortcuts in creating a new program, or ways to successfully transition from one teacher to you.
• Topics will include: advocacy, transition, creating leadership opportunities for students, sample curriculum, and ways to keep you sane as you are taking on this new journey. Other discussion topics will focus directly on what you, as the new teacher, need to feel ready to face the next year.
• Lunch will be provided.

Option B: $239

Lighting, Q-Lab, and Curriculum for Theatre Teachers One-Day Workshop
Tuesday, June 25, 2024. 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

*Please note that this day will take place at UCSD Park and Market. We thank UCSD Park and Market for the generous donation of facilities for our workshops. Specific directions on parking or public transportation will be emailed closer to the start of the program.

• Spend the day in rotation learning light board and design basics, QLab basics to help you create sound effects and soundscapes for your productions, and lesson plans and curriculum to make sound and lighting design accessible to students.
• Join lighting professional Dustin Holum as he walks you through the specifics of the ETC ION light board and lighting basics.
• Lunch will be provided.

Option C: $599

Three Day Technical Theatre Intensive
Wednesday – Friday, June 26, 27, 28, 2024 at La Jolla Playhouse

• Hands on experiences in theatre safety, set design and construction, props, costumes, and technical theatre curriculum.
• Demonstrations and conversations with La Jolla Playhouse professionals.
• Guidance on lesson planning and curriculum development.
• A ticket to a La Jolla Playhouse production on either Weds or Thurs, TBD.
• Intensive begins at 9:00 am on the 26th and concludes at 5:00 pm on the 28th. Detailed schedule will be sent closer to the start date.
• Lunch will be provided.

Locations:
Programming will take place at La Jolla Playhouse, 2910 La Jolla Village Drive, La Jolla, CA 92037. Housing is not provided for this intensive, but there are plenty of hotels and AirBnBs in the area. There are several parking options on or near campus we will share with participants, but public transportation and rideshare are encouraged.
