The Without Walls Festival is a four-day event of site-specific theatre, music, dance and art performances taking place in and around La Jolla Playhouse and the UC San Diego campus. It is presented by La Jolla Playhouse and its partners; the UC San Diego Department of Theatre and Dance, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego and the New Children’s Museum.
Site-specific performance refers to any production that is performed outside of a traditional theatre space. At the WoW Festival, you can expect to see shows in such varied locations such as a Eucalyptus grove (Our Town), in an elevator (Counterweight) or next to a Stuart Collection art sculpture (Hedda’ing). Because many performances are outdoors and may require some walking, casual clothing and walking shoes are recommended.
You should plan to spend several hours, or even a full day, to experience the full range programming the Festival has to offer – from live music in the Beer Garden, to artist chats in the Artist Salon to free performances in the Festival Village. It is recommended to purchase tickets in advance as many productions may sell out, although there will are several free performances that you can enjoy without tickets. Convenient services such as food trucks, beverage bars, restrooms and ATM’s will be available.
