WORKSHOP: Theater is Easy: Creating Theater with Nearly Nothing Except for You

Employing arts education and devised theater exercises and structures, this participatory workshop drops attendees into the process of creating authentic theatrical encounters that ask us to look at our world through a fresh dramatic lens. Primarily using the participants prior experiences and knowledge, this 60-minute workshop invites the group to explore how simple prompts, offers, and gestures can yield a tremendously interesting and joyful theatrical experience. Everything is and can be theater in this workshop.

Artist

Drew Petersen is a New York City based multi-disciplinary content creator, writer, artist, and educator. He currently works with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Park Avenue Armory, New York Theater Workshop, and The New Victory Theater. Drew has been commissioned by, presented at, and created original work for Lincoln Center Education, The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Park Avenue Armory, New Victory Theater, Big Apple Circus, Wallis Annenberg Center in Beverly Hills, Segerstrom Center for the Arts, Miami Theatre Center, Cleveland Playhouse Square, Kinzoo, Hellosaurus, and Sound Lounge in New York City. He is currently an arts education consultant with Brown Arts Institute at Brown University and at MASS MoCA. He was the Artistic Director for Trusty Sidekick Theater Company for 5 years, a theater company devoted to creating high quality, original work for young audiences and their families. In 2018, Drew was the first recipient of the National TYA/USA Artistic Innovation award.

Thomas L. Rothacker is an Actor, Director, Dramaturg and Playwright and has worked in a variety of capacities Off and Off-Off Broadway. He has acted, directed and produced at theatres such as The Tank, Theatre for the New City, Theatre Row, The Kraine, American Theatre of Actors, Looking Glass and Wombat Theatre Co. Tom is also an Associate Professor of Theatre Arts at CUNY Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, NY. He teaches courses such as Theatre History, Play Analysis, Fundamentals of Acting and Acting II. Research and pedagogical interests included movement-based and generated training for the beginning actor, many aspects of theatre history, and the Dramaturg as a voice in the rehearsal room.
