Our 2015 Without Walls (WoW) Festival is quickly approaching!

We are excited to present this event to the community, but we need some help in making sure it's an enjoyable experience for everyone. This is where you come in! Whether it's as Greeters, Artist Liaisons, at an Information Booth, working with our Education Department or Event Assembly Staff, your assistance will be crucial!

Reasons to Volunteer

Volunteers will receive invitations to WoW performance dress rehearsals, complimentary stand-by tickets to WoW and future Playhouse season productions, invitation to our Festival Wrap-up Party and a WoW t-shirt. But best of all – you will get up close and personal with the artists creating these exciting and original performances!

Volunteer Job Descriptions


Guest Services

Information Booth: Be the expert! Work alongside a La Jolla Playhouse staff member as you assist guests with questions ranging from schedules, to directions, show content and where to begin. Info Booth volunteers will be able to suggest itineraries for the day and be proactive problem solvers. The shift is mostly seated but you are free to stand as needed.

Greeter/Directional Assistance: Greeters will be stationed in high traffic areas around the Festival Village and will provide directional assistance to guests as well as answer general Festival questions. A moderate amount of walking will be required for this position. Greeters will have the option of standing or sitting.

Village Shuttle Stop Host/Directional Assistance: Provide directional assistance to guests who are making their way to shows around campus, including specific direction for which shuttle to take for remote locations. Requires a friendly, helpful demeanor. Accommodations can be made to sit for this shift.

Shuttle Host: Ride the shuttle loop during your shift and announce shuttle stops where WoW shows are taking place. Provide directional assistance for patrons traveling to remote locations. You will be seated and riding a shuttle during the shift.

Wristbands/ID Check: Located in the Festival Village, the Wristband/ID Check station is in the middle of the action! Volunteers will be partnered with a security guard who will check IDs while you put wristbands on guests who are 21+. Volunteers must also be 21 or over.


VIP Lounge

VIP Lounge Check-In: Work alongside a La Jolla Playhouse staff member to check in and orientate VIP Pass purchasers. Specific job details will be provided at shift start. Must provide exceptional customer service and have a friendly, helpful demeanor. This is a seated shift.


Volunteer Services/Greenroom

Volunteer Check-In: Help us help more of you! Work with the Volunteer Coordinator(s) to check in other volunteers for their shifts, orientate them to the Festival, provide assignment clarification and check out volunteers at the end of their shifts. You will also be required to keep an eye on the traffic within the Potiker Lobby, ensuring that guests do not go farther than the restrooms. Specific job details will be provided at shift start. Requires a detail-oriented, strong communicator. This is a seated shift.

Festival Runner: Are you up for anything? Festival Runners will work alongside La Jolla Playhouse staff to fill in wherever they are most needed. Festival runners will be stationed in the volunteer green room area, cover breaks for other volunteer positions and will be responsible for keeping the green room stocked with snacks. This position reports to the Volunteer Coordinator and will be required to walk, lift and carry things.


Festival Village

Family Day Volunteer: All Family Day volunteer assignments will take place on Saturday, October 10 in and around the Festival Plaza, and in the Shank Theatre. Specific Family Day volunteer assignments will be determined day-of, but may include:

  • First hand involvement in an exciting live action role play called The Quest! On Family Day, young explorers 8 and up are invited to join our exclusive “Society of Creative Thinkers.” Creativity has gone missing and the Society of Creative Thinkers must embark on The Quest to find it! Part scavenger hunt, part role play and full of clue-solving challenges – The Quest is a mysterious and epic mission to save creativity in the world! You will be required to become a part of the Society of Creative Thinkers to help families complete their mission.
  • Artistic Activities with museums such as Timken Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Photographic Arts, Mingei Museum, San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum. May be asked to assist children with their creative masterpieces and support the live action role play.
  • Assisting partner organizations with morning set up and end of day strike.

Plaza Show Helper Get in on the action! Plaza Show Helpers will work the main Festival Plaza during the busiest time in the evening, providing directional assistance and crowd control, as well as lifting and carrying benches. Must be polite, yet bold, and lift up to 30 lbs.

Seat Filler/Directional Assistance (Show Title: A Completely Factual Tour) This show requires a full capacity of 6 people to go on. Serve as a seat filler if ticketed patrons do not show up and help with directional assistance for patrons making their way over from the Festival Village. Requires standing and walking.

Show Staff/Directional Assistance (Show Title: In Case of Emergency) Provide directional assistance as patrons make their way to see In Case of Emergency. Requires standing.

Show Staff/Directional Assistance (Show Title: Every Path) Be a part of the show! Assist patrons as they navigate the winding paths of Ian's Garden. Requires closed-toed, flat footwear; standing; walking; and navigating uneven terrain.

Show Staff/Mobility Guide (Show Title: OjO) PLEASE NOTE: Sat & Sun shifts will include a 2-hr break in the middle. Be a part of the show! Coordinated, observant, warm, and gentle volunteers needed to help guide participants through difficult and mysterious physical activities.
