CREATIVE COURSES FOR ADULTS

Spotlight On

Reignite your creative spark at a fun interactive course for adults. From storytelling, to acting to musical theatre, Spotlight On courses are designed for people 18 years and over, of all levels of experience from beginner to professional. Everyone is welcome.

Led by our accomplished and welcoming teaching artists, Spotlight On offers a casual, supportive environment that inspires life-long learning and community. Courses are offered as a Summer series and a Fall/ Winter series in 4-7 week sessions, with weekly 2 or 2.5-hour classes.

La Jolla Playhouse is known for developing innovative new works for the stage, and Spotlight On courses are a perfect way to get a taste of the magic that goes into creating a play or musical at one of the country’s most renowned theatre companies.

INTRO TO STORYTELLING

Monday Evenings: 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
October 13 – November 10 (4 weeks, no class on October 20)
Instructor: Emily Stamets (she/her)

Unlock the power of your voice and imagination in this dynamic introduction to storytelling. Perfect for aspiring performers, writers, and anyone with a tale to tell, this class explores the foundations of narrative, character, and structure through theater-based exercises. Participants will learn how to craft compelling stories, connect with an audience, and bring their personal voice to life on stage. No experience necessary—just bring your creativity and a willingness to share!

MUSICAL THEATRE ENSEMBLE

Tuesday Evenings: 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
October 14 – November 11 (5 weeks)
Instructor: Jeffrey Scott Parsons (he/him)

In this high energy class, students will connect the three primary elements of musical theatre performance: acting, singing, and dancing as well as focus on the value of working as a group to tell a cohesive story through song. By examining group numbers from the musical theatre canon, students will learn what it means to move in unison, as well as how to maintain a character’s unique perspective within a large production number. If you’re looking for a creative and collaborative outlet, join our ensemble and be a part of a musical theatre team. Please dress in comfortable clothing for movement.

THE ART OF SAYING YES, AND

Wednesday Evenings: 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
October 15 – November 12 (5 weeks)
Instructor: Trevor Tevel (he/him)

Looking to build stronger social skills, become a better listener, and have more fun in everyday conversations? This improv-based class is all about saying “yes, and”—to connection, trust, and play. Through supportive games and group exercises, you’ll learn how to stay present, respond with authenticity, and collaborate with others in the moment. No performance experience required—just a willingness to laugh, take small risks, and discover how improv can make you a more confident, connected human. Perfect for anyone curious about communication, creativity, or just having a good time with good people.

INTRO TO ACTING

Thursday Evenings: 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm
October 16 – November 13 (5 weeks)
Instructor: Abby Leigh Huffstetler (they/them)

Step into the spotlight with our Intro to Acting class, where imagination and self-expression take center stage! This course is designed for beginners who are eager to explore the fundamentals of acting and build a strong foundation in performance skills.

Throughout this dynamic class, you’ll discover the basics of character development, improvisation, and monologue work. We will guide you through exercises that enhance your vocal delivery, physical presence, and emotional range. Whether you’re looking to overcome stage fright, develop your acting technique, or simply enjoy the thrill of performance, this class offers a supportive and collaborative environment to help you grow.

No previous experience is required—just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to explore the world of theater! Please dress comfortably for movement with closed-toed shoes.

Instructor Bios

Emily Stamets (she/her)

Emily Stamets

Emily Stamets (she/her) is a storyteller and teaching artist. She was a classroom Theatre Arts teacher for over ten years, and co-created over ten original “Hyper-theatre” productions with Rogue Artists Ensemble as a designer, playwright, and puppeteer. She studied Shakespeare performance & production with Shakespeare & Company in MA, and holds Master’s degrees in Theatre Design & Production (SOU) and School Leadership with a focus on arts-integrated inclusive education (Harvard). She is the current Chapter Director of CA Thespians, and sits on the board of the National Storytelling Network. Recent projects include directing the devised SDUSD Honor Theatre Project for the La Jolla Playhouse WOW Festival.

Jeffrey Parsons (he/him)

Jeffrey Parsons

Jeffrey Parsons (he/him) returns to Southern California after directing the musical theatre program at Maui Academy of Performing Arts for the past three years. Onstage credits include Bill Calhoun in Kiss Me Kate (Central City Opera), Bobby Child in Crazy for You (San Diego Musical Theatre/Moonlight Amphitheatre), and the Emcee in Cabaret (Welk Resort/Craig Noel nomination). He has directed productions of Thoroughly Modern Millie, Freaky Friday, as well as youth productions of High School Musical JR and Finding Nemo JR. His choreography for Dames at Sea (Sierra Madre Playhouse) was nominated by the LA Stage Alliance for an Ovation Award. He’s the creator and host of “A Musical Theatre Podcast” on the Broadway Podcast Network and is a member of Actor’s Equity.

Trevor Tevel (he/him)

Trevor Tevel

Trevor Tevel (rhymes with bell) (he/him) has been in a relationship with improv and sketch since 2008. He has trained and performed in Los Angeles at the Westside Comedy Theater, Groundlings, Second City, UCB, iO West, and The Improv Space. Trevor also completed the sketch programs at Groundlings and UCB, which gave him the tools to develop pilots for A&E and Comedy Central. Trevor has toured the country performing improv and sketch for colleges and corporations with the award-winning short form troupe – Mission Improvable. He has also taught and coached at The Improv Space, iO West, Westside Comedy Theater, RISE Comedy (Denver), Mockingbird Improv, and Finest City Improv where he performs with Deep Dish while also producing Spiked Punch.

Abby Leigh Huffstetler (they/them)

Abby Leigh Huffstetler

Abby Leigh Huffstetler (they/them) thrives within the intersections of creative expression, arts education and mental health. They recently earned their MFA in Theatre & Dance from UC San Diego. Abby holds certifications in multiple weapons within The Society of American Fight Directors. They are an actor, educator, intimacy choreographer, actor combatant and clown. UC San Diego credits: DANCE NATION, Hells Canyon, Twelfth Night, End Days, Uncle Vanya. Regional credits: Streetcar Named Desire; Miles For Mary; How to Defend Yourself (Humana Festival of New American Plays) Dracula, The Many Deaths of Nathan Stubblefield (Actors Theatre of Louisville); Free Free Free Free (Exponential Festival); Noises Off (Rome Little Theatre). Film credits: Redrum, Dirt, CBGB. Intimacy Direction credits: 900 Years (UCSD); Two Kids That Blow Shit Up (Endless Summer Productions); Staged Intimacy & Violence (Teaching Assistant, UCSD). Abby is an Actors Theatre Professional Training Company alum. They hold a BFA in Performing Arts from SCAD. There is no space for the perpetuation of white supremacy in their process and exploration.
